Typeface and Power. In all epochs of history, typeface was also an expression of politics and power - from the Roman emperors to fascism. Traces of it can still be found today on Innsbruck's facades and monuments.
Innsbruck's Triumphal Arch perfectly represents the close connection between typeface and power.
Built in 1948, the Liberation Monument uses the type “Capitalis Monumentalis” as well.
The most striking characteristic of the Tyrolean Heimatwerk is the lettering in “Schaftstiefelgrotesk”. This remarkable typography opens a view into a particularly critical chapter in the relationship of power and lettering.
In earlier days, schools were places where the use of power was firmly in place. It is particularly remarkable that in Innsbruck and Tyrol, many elementary schools are adorned with “Fraktur” lettering.
