Fünf Streifzüge in die Welt der Zeichen und Schriften des öffentlichen Raums.
Innsbruck's Triumphal Arch perfectly represents the close connection between typeface and power. A closer look into history reveals how the great political power systems and the essential steps in the development of writing are simultaneously proceeding phenomena. Based on Greek monumental writing, the ancient Romans have developed the so-called “Capitalis Monumentalis” for over 600 years. Basically, this style has not undergone any changes in approximately 2,000 years – only a few letters have been added every now and then, on which our modern-day capital letters are based.
The “Capitalis” type on the Triumphal Arch can be also found on Roman monuments such as the Trajan’s Column or the Arch of Constantine in Rome. Empress Maria Theresa used golden lettering on the Triumphal Arch here in Innsbruck as an expression of her absolute power.
