Fünf Streifzüge in die Welt der Zeichen und Schriften des öffentlichen Raums.
Close to the roof of the Tyrolean State Museum Ferdinandeum you can see a neon lettering by Christoph Hinterhuber. Since 2003, the Tyrolean artist has developed several neon works for public spaces, but also for galleries and exhibitions. The work at the museum is an interpretation on the subject of code that allows for different associations.
In a 2017 conversation, the artist explains, "I first became aware of neon during an artist-in-residence residency in Mexico City around the turn of the millennium. There were huge craft districts where neon lighting things were made in many garages. That impressed me and appealed to me on an aesthetic level. Later, for other reasons as well: On the one hand, because each piece is a manual glassblower's work. And then because it is a technology that has been fully exploited. All the technical possibilities that this technology has, do already exist, it cannot be developed any further. It's completely against the spirit of the times, and I like that. Again, it reminds me of vinyl, which is very close to me through my involvement with music."
